Consiste en empezar un intercambio hablando o escribiendo español, por ejemplo, pero terminándolo en inglés o viceversa. Antes de que los lingüistas estudiaran el fenómeno, fue percibido como algún defecto en el lenguaje del bilingüe que revelaba que no había aprendido a hablar ninguno de sus dos idiomas bien. Sin embargo, la percepción de este fenómeno empezó a cambiar cuando se publicaron los primeros resultados de estudios que se habían enfocado en el cambio de código.
