Perfluоrоаlkyl аnd pоlyfluoroаlkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used, long lasting chemicals that break down very slowly over time. Because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment, many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all all parts of Earth and are present at low levels in a variety of food products and in the environment. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals. There are at least 4,700 PFAS and the number continues to grow rapidly. They are found in many different products, including pots and pans, clothes, firefighting foams, electronics, and many more. Yet, we do not know how to efficiently detect and measure PFAS in our air, water, soil, and in fish and wildlife. We don't know how much people are exposed to PFAS. We don't know how harmful PFAS are to people and the environment. We don't know how to remove PFAS from drinking water or how to manage and dispose of PFAS. One challenge is linking specific PFAS to specific human health or environmental problems because there are so many PFAS used. Still, the research reveals possible links between human exposures to PFAS and adverse health outcomes. These include potential effects on metabolism, pregnancy, children's cognition and neurobehavioral development, and the immune system.
