It is cоmmоn tо think of tools like thermometers аnd stopwаtches аs devices for quantitative measurement in empirical evaluations, but there are many tools that try to similarly quantify human behavior or understanding. This is the essence of standardized tests like the GRE, GMAT, SAT, ACT, and so on: they attempt to quantify student understanding of some body of knowledge. Imagine we are deciding between two tests to use for admissions to our program: the Actual Knowledge Test (AKT) and the Basic Aptitude Test (BAT). Because standardized tests are measurements of students' understanding, we can ask questions about these tests' reliability, validity, generalizability, and precision.  First, define reliability, and briefly describe what it would mean for one of these tests to be more reliable than the other. Then, briefly design a study (or describe some other process) that could identify which test is more reliable. Second, define validity, and briefly describe what it would mean for one of these tests to be more valid than the other. Then, briefly design a study (or describe some other process) that could identify which test is more valid. Third, define generalizability, and briefly describe what it would mean for one of these tests to be more generalizable than the other. Then, briefly design a study (or describe some other process) that could identify which test is more generalizable. Fourth, define precision, and briefly describe what it would mean for one test to be more precise than the other. Then, briefly design a study (or describe some other process) that could identify which test is more precise. When we say "briefly design", we truly mean briefly. For example, if we asked, "Briefly design a study that could identify which test students complete more quickly", a perfectly adequate design would be, "Have 50 students take each test and time them, then check to see if one had a significantly shorter completion time than the other." The goal is just to demonstrate you understand how to generally assess reliability, validity, generalizability, and precision. You are welcome to invent details about these tests as needed if they will help you demonstrate your understanding; for instance, "Let's assume the AKT is four 20-minute tests with 10-minute breaks in between, and the BAT is one 100-minute test. The AKT would require 110 minutes, but the BAT would require only 100 minutes, so the BAT is completed faster."
