Criticаl Thinking (SLO 5)             SLO 7 cаlls upоn students tо “use criticаl and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry and, when pоssible, the scientific method to discern, evaluate and criticize specific issues in psychology.” To explain what that involves, critical thinking has been defined as “the ability to think in a way that is clear, reasoned, reflective, informed by evidence, and aimed at deciding what to believe or do.” In Modules 8 and 9, we practiced critical thinking on issues related to operant conditioning and the best way to conceptualize personality disorders. Here, you will use critical thinking to analyze affirmative action and holistic review.             The courts eventually ruled against affirmative action at UCLA, so they developed a system of holistic review, as a different way to try to accomplish the same goals. Basically, when they review candidates for admissions, they don’t look only at grades and test scores (which tend to unfairly disfavor some groups), they also look at a lot of accomplishments as well as challenges overcome, which can help members of underrepresented groups show their strengths. To learn more about it, refer again to the stories about UCLA and their policy of “holistic review” in admissions. Here’s the link from Southern California Public Radio: http://www.npr.org/2013/06/23/194656555/what-happens-without-affirmative-action-the-story-of-ucla and the link to UCLA’s description of their admission policy http://newsroom.ucla.edu/admissions .   You are also allowed to use the Touro Library: https://www.tourolib.org/ Note that you will need to use your Touro One credentials to log in to the library.

Rylee is а 33-yeаr-оld diаgnоsed with Stage IV оvarian cancer and admitted to a hospice unit. She spends her time in bed watching TV and scrolling through her phone. The OT receives a referral from the hospice team. Rylee tells the OT that she is in severe pain (9/10) and the hospice team is working with her to make a decision about pain management that will not leave her "so drugged that the only thing I can do is sleep." She tells the OT that pain in her pelvis and abdomen worsens when uses the bedpan to urinate or defecate making her feel more helpless about her situation. She would like another solution to avoid the bedpan except at night. The OT voices empathy for the difficulties Rylee is experiencing, then asks questions to capture the concerns Rylee is expressing and then uses a(n) __________ to reflect back her situation.
