They called it “First Night.” Their idea was to mark the coming of the new year in a new way. Traditionally, most people went to private parties. They celebrated the holiday with their own families and friends. The Boston artists wanted a public celebration. They wanted an exciting festival1 that everyone could enjoy. It would be a way to share in the art, music, and cultural life of the city. 2 To many people’s surprise, First Night was an amazing success. About 25,000 people enjoyed the events. Since then, Boston has had a First Night celebration every year, and every year it gets bigger. In 2014, more than one million people went to the festival. 3 The First Night celebration in Boston lasts from 12:00 noon until late into the night on December 31, with more events on January 1. It now includes more than 1,000 artists. People used to have to buy and wear a button to get into the events, but now the festival is free. The events take place at 40 locations2 throughout the city, some of them indoors (in public buildings, shopping centers, churches, and even subway stations) and others outside, like the fireworks at midnight.
