Pleаse reаd the fоllоwing scenаriо and respond to each of the questions below it.    Desiree is a 4 year-old pre-K student. Her school records indicate she is a Black, Latinx female student. Her parents immigrated from Central America a few years prior to Desiree’s birth. Both parents speak Spanish as their primary language.   Her pre-school is housed on an elementary school campus in Tampa, FL. The school site receives Title I funding and serves predominantly Black and Latinx students and families. The school is located in a historically marginalized community in which residents’ household income tends to place them below the poverty line.   She is referred to the school psychologist (you) by her teacher due to concerns regarding her behavior and emotional outbursts. Her teacher indicates that Desiree frequently “ignores directions.” Her teacher also indicates Desiree often throws “tantrums” when redirected or when asked to switch to another activity. These “tantrums” have occasionally included physically hitting the teacher or another student in the classroom. When you review Desiree’s pre-K records, you find that she regularly attends school. Results from pre-K academic and developmental assessments indicate “normative” development and growth scores. There is no written record of any concerns.   Desiree’s parents do not have the same concerns at home as the teacher, but are concerned with her getting in trouble at school. She tells them she does not like school or her teacher. Desiree also tells her parents that she does not have any friends and that the other kids don’t like her. When you talk with Desiree, Desiree tells you the similar things about school, her teacher, and her classmates.   To gather more information, you observe Desiree in the teacher’s classroom multiple times. During the observations:   Desiree complied with 35% of directions given compared to approximately 53% for the remainder of her peers; the majority of Desiree’s lack of compliance with directions occurred during transitions and the initiation of a new activity. The classroom environment lacked visual prompts and routines did not seem to be firmly established. The teacher and assistant teacher often had to redirect children who did not seem to know the expectations of the activity or routine. For most of your observation, teacher talk to children was mostly to provide directions or redirects with very few instances of noticing appropriate behavior and providing positive descriptive feedback. You observed two instances of Desiree refusing to stop the activity she was engaged in, which resulted in the teacher taking the object she was holding directly out of her hands. Desiree then immediately began crying where she was seated. The teacher’s attempts to redirect her to the next activity did not result in her engaging in the target activity. During center time activities where children had the opportunity to play, Desiree interacted with her classmates less than the rest of her peers.   In your role at the school, you have the opportunity to support Desiree, her teacher, and her parents.
