"Clаude McKаy, bоrn Festus Clаudius McKay in Sunny Ville, Jamaica in 1889, was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, a prоminent literary mоvement of the 1920s. His work ranged from vernacular verse celebrating peasant life in Jamaica to poems that protested racial and economic inequities" (The Poetry Foundation). Here is one of his poems, which is a sonnet. Traditionally, the form of a sonnet was used by poets to express love. America Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, And sinks into my throat her tiger’s tooth, Stealing my breath of life, I will confess I love this cultured hell that tests my youth. Her vigor flows like tides into my blood, Giving me strength erect against her hate, Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood. Yet, as a rebel fronts a king in state, I stand within her walls with not a shred Of terror, malice, not a word of jeer. Darkly I gaze into the days ahead, And see her might and granite wonders there, Beneath the touch of Time’s unerring hand, Like priceless treasures sinking in the sand. JOURNAL TOPIC: (this is not a formal essay) Write three paragraphs in which you analyze the combination of the speaker's positive and negative views (this is called ambivalence) towards America as an African American in America in the early 20th century in an urban environment. What images are positive? Which ones are negative? You should also pay special attention to word choice as well as paradox. Do you think without the biographical information provided you would know this poem was written by an African American? Make your case either way using briefly quoted words and phrases from the poem. Finally, how might this poem apply to members of other marginalized groups in America? This will not take you 120 minutes; the extra time is provided so that you have time to copy and paste your journal into a document and upload it in CANVAS to the Journal #1 Upload folder.
