QUESTION NO. 3                                                                                        {10+10 pоints} The figure belоw shоws а dislocаtion line on the horizontаl xz-plane of a crystal, with its tangent vector pointing in the negative z-direction. a)    If the dislocation is “Edge” in character, then derive the equation (considering external and internal work) for the GLIDE force acting on it and causing it to move on the horizontal plane. Be sure to define the respective terms and the appropriate directional components, with regard to the frame of reference. b)    If the dislocation in the figure below is “Screw” in character, will it be able to glide on the same horizontal plane? If so, derive the equation for the force that will cause it to glide on the horizontal xz-plane and along the x-direction.

Why does the presence of a dislocation result in significantly decreasing the crystal strength?   b)      The figure below shows two intersecting {111} slip planes in an FCC crystal, with the (a/2) unit dislocations gliding on the respective planes. Prove that (i) it is energetically favorable for the two unit dislocations gliding on intersecting slip planes to combine, as per the following reaction  , and (ii) what is the effect of the reaction on the subsequent mobility of dislocations.
