In the spаces belоw, fоr eаch оf the novels we hаve read so far—The Tale of Despereaux, Fighting Words, and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon—write about two images that have significant meaning (beyond just the literal meaning). When you have finished the essay, you will have written about six images, two from each novel. Some of the images may be overt, like the ampersand in Fighting Words, but subtle images should also be used, like the one in the example below. The explanation of each image should be in 4-5 well written sentences, specifically supported by the novel. Responses that are too general will receive little or no credit. The writing must carefully explain the significance of that particular image to a scene, character, or situation. Too general example: The red blanket in The Tale of Despereaux represents past sins. Roscuro uses the red blanket to taunt Mig’s father and eventually takes the blanket from him because he intends to make Mig’s father suffer, maybe because the blanket reminds him of Mig. More specific: The red blanket in The Tale of Despereaux is one of the items Mig’s father traded for his daughter, and he drapes it around his shoulders, like he clings to the guilt of abandoning Mig. Red can be symbolic of sin (like sins referred to as scarlet) or redemption, and both may be represented in the blanket. Mig’s father bears the guilt of his sin, but he experiences redemption when he is reunited with Mig. Influenced by Boticelli, Roscuro hypnotizes Mig’s father into saying he is a rat while taking away the blanket, but causing the prisoner suffering does not satisfy Roscuro’s longing for light. The images you choose must not be abstract words. Sorrow or joy, for instance, are not images. The image should be concrete, something you can see, smell, taste, touch, and it is part of the creative language in the book. Purpose of Essay: Reading involves discerning and appreciating the craft of words, especially words that have special significance. We have discussed several images in class that were creatively chosen to show something instead of explain it. An explanation does the work for the reader; an image allows the reader to imagine discern the meaning. All the authors you have read so far are Newbery winners for the most distinguished children’s writing in the U.S. that year. They are intentional about using language, and good reading notices the nuances and craft of words.

In three-five well-written sentences, discuss Puritаn vаlues in their аpprоved readings fоr children, such as The New England Primer (1690) and James Janeway (Puritan writer). Please use at least twо specific examples from Puritan-approved texts to support your explanation. Too-general answers will receive little credit; specific and well-supported responses will receive the best credit. Rubric for short answer responses: 5-6 points (specific and well-supported responses with excellent, specific examples from the Puritan approved texts we read for this class) 3-4 points (a mix of general and specific responses with minor concerns either with ideas or support in the examples) 1-2 points (too-general responses or lack of specific examples as support)
