My friend wаs sо excited tо tell me thаt her 2-week-оld newborn wаs already imitating her when she smiles at him! This surprised me because that’s not a typical skill that a child that young has in their repertoire. When describing the situation to me, she told me that she smiles at him all the time (obviously) and that he smiles too! She said that it usually doesn’t happen right away, but a few minutes later, he will smile at her. She described this as an imitative behavior. Why, as a behavior analyst, who knows the criteria for a behavior to be considered an imitation, would I NOT consider the baby’s smiling to be an imitation?
