Chооse One оf the following prompts to compose а persuаsive essаy, following the directions above.  Choice One: Daylight Savings Time—Necessary or Not? For many days after “springing forward,” many people feel a little jet-lagged and cranky.  Research shows that time changes affect more than one’s mood; they change energy use, health, worker productivity and even traffic safety.  Still, some say that the time change is necessary for economic reasons, such as less electricity consumption and longer harvesting hours.  Should daylight savings time be discontinued or kept as it is?  Write an essay in which you argue your side of this issue, and develop your ideas with two strong points. Choice Two: Should the High School Drop Out Age Be Increased Nationally? In many states in the US, the high school dropout age is 16. However, groups are advocating for this age to be increased to 18 nationally due to their belief that compulsory education until 18 will result in increased academic achievement.  Still, some feel that if a student is 16 and ready to leave school, he/she should be able to do so to lower distractions for other students in the school.  Home-schooling groups also take issue with an 18-year-old compulsory enrollment age since many home-schooled students finish high school early.  Should the high school dropout age be increased nationally to 18, or not?  Write an essay in which you argue your side of the issue, and develop your assertion with two strong points. Choice Three: The Greatest Leader Pick a leader from history or from your own community/family, and write an essay persuading an audience who may not be very familiar with that leader that he or she should be considered the greatest leader found in history. Develop two good reasons to support your assertion and be sure to give details to support those reasons.  Choice Four: Should Youth Sports be Less Intense? Some children or preteens are on sports teams that are so competitive that the children spend several days a week nearly every week of the year playing in competitive games (and traveling to these games). These children’s families have organized their whole lives around getting these students to and from practices and competitions.  This leads some to argue that youth sports has become too intense. Others argue that this type of intensity benefits both the children and families.  Should youth sports be less intense and focus more on having fun while allowing for children to develop a healthy competitive spirit, or is this intensity good for children and families?  Write an essay in which you argue your side of this issue, and support your assertion with 2 good reasons. Choice Five: Should People Marry Only within Their Denomination? Although most Christians agree that believers should not marry outside of the faith (we should remain “equally yoked”), there is less agreement in regards to marrying within one’s denomination.  Some say that doctrinal issues might cause marital strife if people from different denominations (for example, a Baptist and an Assembly of God member) marry.  Others say that as long as both spouses believe in Jesus as savior, then doctrinal issues can be worked out, so it doesn’t matter if one marries within his/her denomination.  Should one marry only a person who is from his/her denomination?  Write an essay in which you argue your side of this issue and support your assertion with 2 good reasons. Choice Six: Government Surplus: How Should It Be Spent? Imagine that the federal government found it had made an error in regards to the country’s debt load and found out that the US had a 2 trillion dollar surplus.  The President is taking suggestions from college students in regards to how to spend this surplus, and you have decided to give your input. In a well-developed essay, choose one area on which this surplus should be spent and support your assertion with two good reasons.  NOTE: If you prefer, you may focus your essay on a smaller government, such as your state or city.  If you choose to do so, you will need to think a little smaller in terms of money: for the state, 20 billion, and for the city (depending on size) less than that.   Choice Seven: Teachers with Guns: A Good Idea? In the past few years with the number of school shootings in the US increasing, the idea to arm teachers has been discussed and has been implemented in a few places.  Several groups advocated training teachers to use guns to protect themselves and the children in their classrooms in the event of an armed intruder threat.  Those against this idea are horrified at the thought of having possibly hundreds of guns in a school, and they think that professionals, such as security guards and police officers, should be the ones who are armed.  Should school teachers be armed in the classroom?  Write an essay in which you argue your side of this issue, and support your ideas with two good reasons. Choice Eight: A City Problem: What Should Be Done? Imagine that your home city’s mayor is asking for suggestions to improve your town.  What is one issue in your town or region that needs to be improved, and why is this important?  For example, your city might need to significantly improve the schools, and your suggestion would be to increase local funding to those schools.  Write an essay in which you argue for one specific area of improvement in your city, and support your assertion with two good reasons for that assertion.  You should imagine the mayor and city council as the audience, but avoid using 2nd person in your paper.  Choice Nine: Virtual Learning--Should Schools Continue the Trend? When the world changed with the onset of COVID-19, learning for students also changed.  Many had not even heard of Zoom before the Spring of 2020, but now most of the world is familiar with it or some other type of streaming video platform; most students have had classes using such a format.  Many schools, including K-12 and university institutions, have said that virtual learning is the future and are embracing it, expanding the offering of completely virtual degrees and school programs.  Some are offering fewer in-person class options, as well.  But should the world move towards this virtual learning domain? What are the benefits? The drawbacks? Write an essay in which you argue for or against expanding fully virtual learning, supporting your assertion with two strong reasons. Choice Ten: College: Can it wait? Often times, high school students feel that they need to start college right away, whether due to pressure from their parents or society in general.  However, many 18-year-olds aren’t quite ready for the rigors of college, which demands them to deal with being independent on a new level; for this reason, many young students do very poorly and end up dropping out.  On the other hand, some people say that students cannot wait to start college because of the competitive job market in our country and across the world.  What do you think?  Can college wait, or should recent high school graduates jump in feet-first? Write an essay in which you argue for or against recent HS graduates starting college right away. Choice Eleven: Casual dating: acceptable for Christians? Throughout the years, there has been debate about whether casual dating is a good idea for Christians (or anyone, for that matter).  Those on the “no dating unless marriage is in the picture” camp believe that the emotional commitment of dating is too serious to take lightly, so dating is only acceptable in light of a foreseeable marriage.  However, others feel that dating many different people gives one a better understanding of how to react to and deal with many personalities and situations.  Which is best?  Take a side on this issue and support your assertion with two good reasons.
