Selectiоn 4 I Dreаm A Wоrld, published in 1989, feаtures 75 blаck wоmen whose lives have changed America. A full-page photograph of each woman accompanies her brief autobiographical remarks. Such famous African Americans as Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, Toni Morrison, Rosa Parks, Wilma Rudolph, Cicely Tyson, Faye Wattleton, and Oprah Winfrey are included, to name but a few. However, the lesser known women present equally fascinating portraits that demonstrate the variety and richness of their contributions to the arts and social programs, to science, medicine, sports, law, entertainment, politics, education, civil rights, and the armed forces. The term "unsung heroines" aptly describes many of these women. Winson and Dovie Hudson, for example, were the first African Americans to file a school desegregation suit against the state of Mississippi, despite intimidation that included mailbox bombs and an unnecessary foreclosure on their small farm. They also persisted in registering themselves and others to vote and, in so doing, drew attention to illegal polling place practices such as literacy tests. Over the years, the Hudsons have also been active in lobbying in Washington, and they have long served as members on boards concerned with community welfare. Josephine Riley Matthews is another unsung heroine; in 1976 she was named Woman of the Year and Outstanding Older American by her home state of South Carolina. Graduating from high school at the age of 74—an accomplishment in itself—"Mama Jo" is best known for being a fourth generation midwife, having successfully delivered over 1,300 babies. On her 76th birthday, Mama Jo delivered triplets, and she retired the following year, after serving the rural women of her state for forty years. Clara McBride Hale is another remarkable woman included in this inspiring book. Not wanting to leave her two young children while she worked elsewhere, Clara Hale began caring for other children in her own home, at first, just during the week, but eventually full time. She ended up raising forty children, all of whom went to college, and then, in 1969, "Mother Hale" retired—that is, until her daughter, a physician, sent her an addicted baby to care for. In 1973, Mother Hale opened Hale House, a refuge over the years for hundreds of addicted babies nursed back to health and reunited with their rehabilitated mothers. In 1985, President Ronald Reagan named Mother Hale an "American Hero" for her devotion to the well-being of children. __________, many of these outstanding women have devoted their lives to promoting education. For example, Ruby Middleton Forsythe has taught elementary school in a one-room school house on Pawley’s Island South Caroling, for over sixty years. Marva Nettles Collins of Chicago, whose efforts were the subject of a television movie, opened a home school in order to provide better education for inner city students. Three college or university presidents are also featured in I Dream a World, a book which is, altogether, an exceptional collection of portraits of women whose lives have indeed changed America.
