They prepare a well with a solution containing Cr(H2O)63+ and they observe the color of the solution to be violet. Then, they add an excess of a new ligand X, forming CrX63+, which they observe to be a red color. Next, they add an excess of a new ligand Y, forming CrY63-, which they observe to be green in color. Using these observations, determine the placement of ligands X and Y in the spectrochemical series compared to H2O. Rank the ligands in order of increasing ligand field strength from weaker field to stronger field.
