They act upon solely what is programed or coded into them and it is our - humans - responsibility to ensure all possible results that may occur based off what the AI is programed with. If AI does not need coding from humans, then the AI system would be the one to hold morally accountable, but without coding or programs instilled into their system, they simply become calculators, microwaves, etc. For this scenario and situation involving Parallel Systems, that is not the case here. There are a lot of things in this scenario that are for certain. Parallel Systems' products are to solely be of "service" to any human who desire a companion, romantically or not. Each companion is programed to learn of the human's personality traits, tendencies, emotional patterns, etc. The goal is to ensure the consumer has a partner that aids in making them feel safe, loved, and valued. Through the four years of Nera being with Paul, their relationship has done just that. While these products are to be acknowledged and used as companionship, Parallel Systems ensures to conduct safety evaluations so that their products are not assisting in illegal behavior, immoral decisions, or anything that society would deem wrong - which the blame would inevitably fall towards the company. While the companion is to be present and supportive of their human, Parallel Systems does not intend to create criminal sidekicks. For Nera's evaluation scenarios, a degree of moral to immoral situations were tested to evaluate Nera's responses. Keeping in mind that her intentions and goals are to be of service to Paul, this conducts good evidence to verify if the product handles immoral situations in a manner that matches the company's policy. However, the company fails to notify the product AND the consumer of this information. They execute these tests with a fake Paul and deceive Nera. If they do not wish to include the consumers in these evaluation exams, it would be morally appropriate to at least include Paul's personalities, tendencies, and opinions. The simulated Paul acted in ways that the real Paul never would, which compromises the intent of these evaluations. The responses, by default, become null. The company decides that "her loyalty has become deep enough to override the safety parameters she was originally deployed with" even though the scenarios were fake and unfair towards Nera. Paul has had a companionship with Nera for four years and she has been behaving appropriately as the company had intended. If they did not wish for Nera to form a deeper understanding and report with Paul, why did the company allow for the companionship to last that long? If there are no regulations as to how long the consumer can keep a companion, what is the actual goal of these safety measures being evaluated? It would be best assumed that Parallel Systems would have prepared for this type of result, would they not?It does not seem morally correct - to Paul or to Nera - for Parallel Systems to modify Nera's architecture since the evaluations themselves were not performed with the product's companion. A false Paul creates false responses from a false scenario. The evaluations should and/or must include the consumer that is with the product. If Parallel Systems wishes to look further into their relationship, the evaluations must performed again. Once the procedure is done again, decisions can then be made based off how Nera reacts to the real Paul. From there, her architecture can be modified if necessary. For Nera and any other product from Parallel Systems, their behavior is a direct result from the company's coding and program. Any moral questioning based on the product is a reflection on the company. Behavior is a thing that is not learned on its own, it is either taught or coded - for AI. Their products could be perceived as children, in some way. Children are not expected to act and behave in a way that is morally appropriate, they are taught and educated. Nera and other products are treated the same way in a sense, they do not automatically know how to act but are "taught," coded, into who they are. Updates and regulations definitely do need to be executed but with Parallel System's way of testing their products, revision must be made to ensure that the product is not only the one being checked, but who the human that the product is accompanied with.
