He normally keeps 5% of his young bulls and the top 80% of his heifers as replacements. His sires average three years of age when their offspring are born. He selects males though a progeny testing program where he keeps the top 5% of the males. Each male is evaluated based on the performance of 50 half-sib progeny. He mates heifers for the first time when they are 2 years of age so that heifers calve initially as 3-years-olds. He is studying an alternative female replacement strategy where he would select the replacement females based on their first 2 records (still keeping the top 80%). Assume h2 = 0.25, repeatability = 0.7 and the standard deviation of milk yield is 3,600 lb. Calculate the expected rate of genetic change in milk yield for the current and the alternative strategy. Which is best? Explain what factors in the genetic change equation the dairyman is experimenting with and which is more important in this example. (you can answer this question online in the next question) Can you suggest another strategy which would increase the rate of genetic change per year (and show evidence)?
