Discuss some of the "pendulum swings" that we have seen over the thousands of years dealing with mental health issues. Give some practical examples of these pendulum swings both in the remote past, but also in the recent past. Also, comment on why mentally ill patients seem to be prone to maltreatment, abuse, and experimentation by most segments of society. Were religious leaders, doctors, or politicians motivated by evil intentions, or what lead them to be so misguided? How do we alleviate this maltreatment and prevent future discrimination or mistreatment?
