In addition, antibodies that attach to the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein initiate classical pathway activation. Furthermore, SARS-CoV-2 spike protein may directly disrupt the alternative pathway of complement activation by competing with factor H. These observations are consistent with the long-known observation that complement activation is often associated with acute respiratory infections. For example, increased anaphylatoxin concentrations are found in serum from patients with influenza virus H1N1 infection of the lungs.
