This is the essаy pоrtiоn оf your finаl exаm. Please read directions carefully and take your time. This final exam is 20% of your overall course grade.  Instructions:•    DEVELOP YOUR RESPONSES FULLY AND JUSTIFY YOUR UNDERSTANDING WITH EXAMPLES FROM THE COURSEWORK.•    BE SURE TO SHOW COLLEGE LEVEL WRITING THROUGH QUALITY ANALYSIS AND THOROUGH REVISION AND EDITING.•    NUMBER YOUR ANSWERS FOR CLARITY.  1) Below are three examples of every day leaders showing up for their communities and using their strengths to make positive change. Choose one article to read, and then type out notes about the main ideas and supporting details of the article.  EVERY DAY LEADERS MAKING POSITIVE CHANGE Article 1: Teens Strengthen Tallahassee Together Ashley Faris - May 9, 2025 Article 2: Detroit Muscle—Building a Strong Community Through the Georgia Street Community Garden Leigha Anderson - August 2, 2012 Article 3: Website Shows Foster Kids Their Wishes are Worthwhile Danielle Berger - Oct 28, 2013 2) Review this template for a summary/response essay and draft, revise, and submit your polished summary/response below.  Summary Response Essay: A summary/response essay combines a brief overview of a text’s main ideas (summary) with the writer’s personal reaction or analysis (response). It demonstrates understanding of the source material while offering critical insight, connections, and reflection.   Structure of Summary/Response Essay - TWO COLLEGE LEVEL Paragraphs:  Paragraph 1: Summary (no opinions; shorter because it is just stating what the article is about) Paragraph 2: Response (much longer because it provides your course content connections and college-level analysis of the article) The Summary Paragraph (SHORTER): A summary is a concise paraphrase of all the main ideas in an essay. The summary paragraph should distill the essence of the text into a few sentences. This could involve identifying the author's thesis, outlining the key supporting arguments, and briefly mentioning the overall conclusion. The goal is to provide the reader with a clear understanding of what the original text is about. This should be written in third person (no "I" or "me").  Summary Writing Guideline: Do not use the first person in this summary paragraph. State the author’s name and the title of the text you’re summarizing in the first 1-2 sentences of the summary. Express the author’s main idea in your own words (paraphrase) in the first 1-2 sentences of the summary. Identify main points that support the main idea. Write the main points in your own words. Arrange the ideas so the organization and transition words in the summary paragraph reflect the original text and the order ideas were introduced. Meaning, present the major points in the order that the author made them and continually refer back to the article being summarized (i.e. "Damon argues that ..." or "Goodman also points out that..."). Show that you are summarizing someone else’s ideas with expressions like “According to” + author’s name or author’s last name + a signal verb. Some Signal Verbs:  asserts  explores  notes  considers  contends  points out  discusses  maintains  compares  examines  mentions  suggests  The Response Paragraph (LONGER): A response focuses on the writer’s personal reaction to a text, idea, or experience. It includes opinions, analysis, and reflections supported by examples, showing how the writer connects with or evaluates the material. Unlike the summary, it is composed of YOUR opinions in relation to the article being summarized; the first person perspective is needed in this paragraph (meaning, use "I" and "me"). It examines ideas that you connect to leadership studies; identifies the essay's strengths and weaknesses in reasoning; and in quality of supporting examples. A good response is persuasive; therefore, it should cite facts, examples, and personal experience.   How to write your two paragraph summary/response essay: 1) Review the article and ensure that your notes are accurate and satisfactory; be sure that you can find the main idea of the article and the supporting details 2) Follow the summary writing guidelines above and draft your summary paragraph of the article 3) Next, look over your prepared course notes and find course concepts and ideas that connect to the article 4) Begin drafting a quality, college-level response paragraph to the article that incorporates your leadership thoughts, ideas, and course comprehension. Like all college-level paragraphs, it should include a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a conclusion. This paragraph can be as long as you need it to be to fulfill this final exam task 5) When you're finished, revise your draft of both paragraphs using the information above to guide your revisions.  6) Make basic punctuation and spelling edits and submit your two-paragraph summary/response essay.  Grading Rubric for Summary/Response Essay SUMMARY (ONE SHORTER PARAGRAPH): First sentence: author, title, and main idea Third person No opinions Main points paraphrased and in order No plagiarism Author tags and signal verbs: Smith asserts, Smith believes, Smith writes… RESPONSE (ONE LONGER PARAGRAPH) Introductory sentence that shifts to personal response First person  Personal insights and analysis  Connections to course content Closing sentence that concludes College-level analysis and development GENERAL WRITING STANDARDS: Flow: clear, focused, cohesive Transitions are present and appropriate Free from grammar errors Avoided slang  Avoided “your” and “your” throughout
