The rat is then placed in the operant chamber, which has a floor connected to an electric current, a lever for the rat to press, and several different colored lights. When the light is green, pressing the lever results in food being delivered in a bin for the rat. When the light is yellow, pressing the lever results in...nothing but wasting the rat's time. When the light is red, pressing the lever results in a mild electric shock to the rat's feet. After a few sessions, the rat presses the lever reliably when the light is green, and stays the heck away from the lever when the light is yellow or red. What a smart rat!
