Paragraphs THE STERKFONTEIN CAVES – THE CRADLE OF MANKIND Situated an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Sterkfontein Caves are world-famous for their fossil finds and are a popular visitor destination. 1 After an extensive facelift in 2005, the Sterkfontein Caves site is now home to a top restaurant and conferencing facilities, offering easy access to the caves with modern walkways and a boardwalk past the excavation site where globally acclaimed fossils have been discovered. 2 The Sterkfontein Caves are owned by the University of the Witwatersrand, whose scientists have been responsible for the main excavations at this World Heritage Site. 3 They are credited with many of the most notable discoveries in the caves, including the world-famous hominid (human) fossil of Mrs Ples, (Australopithecus africanus) the most complete human skull ever found, dating back more than three million years. 4 Several hundred plant species are found in the area around the Sterkfontein Caves, making it one of the most biodiverse plant communities in the world. Most of the plants are grasses, but sunflowers, asters as well as various types of fungi can also be found. Various trees and plants in the area were used by the early hominids (humans) for medicinal and everyday purposes. 5 The plants in the area form part of the Rocky Highveld Grassland, which has numerous species, some of which are rare and endangered, and some of which began flowering as early as 118 million years ago. Marion Bamford, a palaeobotanist at Wits University, explains that “parts of the ecosystem have been damaged over the years, due to agricultural usage and introduction of non-native vegetation. Some of the endemic flora and fauna are now extinct, and not all of the plants and animals now found there are historically native to the area". 6 However, the variety of wildlife and vegetation indicates that some of the wildlife in the area are descendants of larger predecessors like the extinct giant buffalo, giant wildebeest, and porcupine.
