Vоcаbulаry | Units 1A аnd 1B DIRECTIONS: Chооse the word from the drop-down menu that has the same meaning as each underlined word or phrase. During international events such as the World Cup matches, soccer is often referred to as "The Beautiful Game" because so many people have a strong love for it. Where did this phrase come from and how did it get started? No one knows exactly, but people who love the game think the movements of the players are very graceful on the field. Some sports commentators used the term in the 1950s, but it was made famous when the Brazilian player Pele published his autobiography My Life and the Beautiful Game in 1977. Although Pele's book was the primary cause for the popularity of the phrase, the use of it is now global. You hear it everywhere soccer is played today.

Reаding #2: Ending the Tiger Wаrs DIRECTIONS: Chооse the best аnswer fоr each question. Ending the Tiger Wars [A] When there is not enough to go around, people often turn on each other. It is a classic human tale. If trapped in difficult conditions with little food or fresh water, humans try to survive at all costs, even to the point of conflict. It is thus no surprise that the same survival game takes place between humans and animals, especially when limited resources mean that both man and beast must fight for their own well-being. [B] In the Sundarbans, a series of mangrove1 forests along the border of India and Bangladesh, this game of survival takes place between local villagers and Bengal tigers. The risks of this game are high. In fact, every month, at least one villager dies in the forest or along the water from an attack by a Bengal tiger. Likewise, tigers entering the village looking for food are often attacked and beaten to death by groups of scared or angry villagers.  [C] The difficult conditions of the Sundarban landscape threaten both tigers and humans, thus putting them into dangerous situations. For the villagers of the region, declining resources near their homes force them deeper and deeper into the forest to collect food and materials. These include honey, fish, crabs, and wood - all necessary to keep villagers out of extreme poverty. By going further into the forest, however, the villagers enter tiger territory and risk their own lives. [D] A similar problem exists for the Bengal tigers. Within the forests, there is often not enough prey to keep the tigers satisfied. This forces them into the villages in search of livestock and even human flesh. With many in the villages having lost a friend or family member from a tiger attack, revenge killings of tigers are not uncommon. Unfortunately, this has made a bad situation worse for the Bengal tigers. Already endangered due to human poaching,2 revenge killings are contributing to the Bengal tiger's eventual extinction. [E] Luckily, it is not all bad news for the villagers and tigers of the Sundarban region. Many volunteer organizations have been doing their part to protect humans and tigers from each other. One example of such an organization is Wild Team, a network of brave volunteers from the Bangladeshi side of the border. To convince humans not to engage in tiger killings, Wild Team educates local villagers on the importance of Bengal tigers for the local ecosystem. When a tiger does find its way into a village, Wild Team sends one of its 49 emergency response teams to try to scare the tiger back into the forest using non-violent means. [F] While these measures protect tigers from humans, Wild Team also works hard to keep villagers safe from tigers. For one, training is provided to honey collectors so that they will know how and when a tiger is likely to attack. Wild Team also works with local villagers to release limited livestock into the forests. The aim is to keep tigers from entering the villages by providing them with an alternative source of food within their own territory. [G] Protecting both tigers and villagers is, of course, a delicate balance. Nevertheless, it is an effort that is far better than leaving them to fight each other into oblivion.3 With the help of Wild Team, the future of life in the Sundarbans now has a glimmer4 of hope. 1A mangrove is a tropical tree that grows in or near water. 2Poaching involves illegally capturing or killing animals. 3Oblivion is used to describe something that is forgotten or no longer important. 4A glimmer is a small sign or indication of something.
