A top rheumatologist (a doctor who specializes in diseases that affect bones, muscles, and joints) came to the realization that the majority of his patients who were suffering from osteoarthritis were female. He found this intriguing and wondered why this was the case. He got in touch with another expert rheumatologist, and they set out to determine whether gender played a role in the occurrence of osteoarthritis. They compiled a list of 100 patients who had all had to undergo knee and hip replacement surgery in the last six months, due to crippling osteoarthritis. They then plotted this data onto the graph, SHOWN ON THE RESOURCE PAGE AS D. After seeing the results, they published a research paper on the possible reasons for why they obtained the results that they did. An extract from this research paper is given here: “Osteoarthritis, commonly known as “wear and tear arthritis”, is the most common type of arthritis. It is associated with a breakdown of cartilage in joints and can occur in almost any joint in the body. It commonly occurs in the weight-bearing joints of the hips, knees, and spine. It also affects the fingers, thumb, neck, and large toe. The research clearly shows that women are more susceptible to this condition than men and are increasingly prone to it as they age. A number of possible reasons can account for this. For example, women who go through menopause often gain weight, and the increased stress on the joints may explain the rise in osteoarthritis seen among women after age 55. By the time a woman reaches 65, she is twice as likely as a man to experience osteoarthritis symptoms. Another possible explanation is anatomical: women’s hips are wider than men’s’. The angle formed by the hip bones being wider than the knees puts more stress on the outside of the knees. This “knock-kneed” position, even if slight, can cause osteoarthritis over time in some women. A third possible reason can be linked to hormones. A woman who has received hormone replacement therapy (HRT) when faced with menopause, as well as women who have given birth (and therefore have increased levels of the hormone Relaxin in their bodies), also seem more prone to this condition.”
