Revised Higher Human Biology Unit 11

What is photosynthesis? – Plants making their own food and respiring. The chlorophyll inside the cells of plants absorbs light energy from the sun, which is used to rearrange the atoms of carbon dioxide and water in the chlorophyll to produce glucose. Oxygen is also produced as a waste product.
trophic level – each step in a food chain or food web
Cardio-vascular diseases (CDVs) – Diseases that affect the heart and circulatory systems. They are the main cause of death in the UK.
chorionic villus sampling (CVS) – A technique for diagnosing genetic defects while the fetus is in an early development stage within the uterus. A small sample of the fetal portion of the placenta is removed and analyzed.
Which of these is NOT a product of the citric acid cycle? – acetyl CoA
histamine – A chemical alarm signal released by injured cells of vertebrates that causes blood vessels to dilate during an inflammatory response.
compound light – A microscope that allows light to pass through a specimen and uses two lenses to form an image.
fertilization – process in sexual reproduction in which male and female reproductive cells join to form a new cell
biomagnification – toxins (pesticides, mercury) build-up in food chains and affect top most
The term hypothyroidism means
Nitrogen fixation – the process by which specialized bacteria convert nitrogen gas in the atmosphere to nitrates, a usable form of nitrogen
nucleus – a part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth and reproduction
RNA splicing – Process by which the introns are removed from RNA transcripts and the remaining exons are joined together.
neural tube – A tube made of ectodermal cells in the embryo, which eventually develops into the spinal cord.
cellular respiration – A complex set of chemical reactions involving an energy transformation where potential chemical energy in the bonds of "food"molecules is released and partially captured in the bonds of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)molecules.
*Logistic growth: – (means logical growth) Population growth in bacteria that is controlled because of limited resources. Limited food or water means limited growth of the population.
The term hypоthyrоidism meаns
Aerobic – A metabolic process that requires oxygen.
ATP synthase
9.2 – large protein that uses energy from H+ ions to bind ADP and a phosphate group together to produce ATP
Right hemisphere: – gets sensory messages and controls the motor function of the left half of the body, more active during spatial and creative tasks
fruit – A mature ovary of a flower that protects dormant seeds and often aids in their dispersal.
