To meet its growing demand, Nevada's largest city has proposed a $3.5 billion project that would divert groundwater from 450 km (280 mi) away. Do you think such diversions are ethically justified? If this project were to destroy rural communities and wetland ecosystems at the diversion site in eastern Nevada, would that be an acceptable cost given the economic activity generated in Las Vegas? How else might cities like Las Vegas meet their future water needs? 2. A new landfill is being planned and two potential sites are currently being reviewed. One site is located in an area of predominately poor, minority peoples while the other is in an upper-middle class, white neighborhood. In which neighborhood is the landfill likely to be built? Why? What social and economic factors will be involved in the decision? If both neighborhoods were to protest having the facility built in their area, which is likely to be heard more? Why? How could we fix this situation taking into account the goals of sustainable development?
