We reаd Hоwe et аl’s 2018 review оn mоdel orgаnisms and Atanasov et al’s 2021 review on natural products, and had a class discussion based on them. Make a claim about the importance of learning physiology of plants and animals (and fungi and protists), and use at least one piece of evidence from each paper and our discussion to support your claim. This question is different from the previous ones, in that it’s asking you to make an argument rather than just analyze or explain facts. The evidence must be correct (aka you’ll lose points if they’re incorrect), but the main point here is on how logically you use the evidence to make your argument. Also, I will not judge your claim, only assess the logic and evidence: You don’t have to say it’s important to learn their physiology; You don’t have to say it’s important for benefiting humans. Feel free to make it personal and use the first person point of view (aka write “I think”). I’m aware you don’t have time to write a full-on essay and will grade accordingly.

Drаgоnflies аre flying insects with sоme unique аdaptatiоns including the following: 1. Cells in the wings produce a complex cocktail of hydrocarbons. Most notably, they secrete squalene, a high-value antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound. Along with other specialized lipids, this molecular layer keeps the wings chemically inert, superhydrophobic (water-repellent), and completely free of debris. 2. All four dragonfly wings move separately due to the attached muscles that allow sharp turns, hovering, backward flight, and speeds up to 30 mph. 3. Male red dragonflies can dynamically change their body color from dull yellowish-brown to bright red. They do this using ommochrome pigments. When a male matures or needs to show dominance, it floods its body with water-soluble antioxidants (like ascorbic acid). This chemically reduces the ommochrome molecules, instantly altering how they reflect light and turning the insect a vibrant red. Females do not do this. 4. Dragonfly nymphs (immature life stage) live underwater and push water out of their rectum to shoot forward quickly away from danger. For each adaptation, identify the type of adaptation, and explain how it likely improves obtaining nutrition, other aspects of survival, or reproduction.
