This is my first year abroad studying film at the Universidad Complutense, and I’m writing this blog to keep my friends up to date with my experiences. This week the department is doing a film series of one of my favorite actors, Penélope Cruz Sánchez, although you probably know her best as Penélope Cruz. People’s names here fascinate me: people use both their paternal surnames (el apellido paterno) and their maternal surnames (el apellido materno), so in Penélope’s case, you can guess that her father’s last name is Cruz and her mother’s Sánchez. Even after marrying Javier Bardem, she still keeps Cruz as her surname. I think there are advantages to these naming practices; for example, if a woman gets married (or divorced, for that matter), her name never changes, as she keeps her paternal surname throughout her life. By the same token, her children will keep her family name alive. It’s curious though, that some people are known by their apellido materno, as is the case Penélope’s husband, the famous actor Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem. What is important for me is that with this custom, a person’s name becomes his/her identification for life and reflects family heritage. One of my favorite Spanish musicians is María Nieves Rebolledo Vila, better known as Bebe. What versatility! I’m hoping to attend one of her concerts while I’m here! Have you seen the music video “K.I.E.R.E.M.E.”? ¡Es divertido1!   1divertido fun
