LABORATORY INTRODUCTION: One chаrаcteristic оf life is thаt living оrganisms are made up оf molecules containing carbon. These are called organic molecules. The most common organic compounds found in living organisms are LIPIDS, CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEINS, and NUCLEIC ACIDS. Common foods, which often consist of plant materials or substances derived from animals, are also combinations of these organic compounds.  Watch the video What are Nutrients?    Simple chemical tests with substances called indicators can be conducted to determine the presence of organic compounds. A color change of an indicator is usually a positive test for the presence of an organic compound. We are going to look for different nutrients in a series of foods using simple laboratory tests.  We will test for starch, glucose, protein, and fats.    Use the drop down menus to match these nutrients with the correct biological macromolecule. (Note: Some macromolecules may be used more than once. Some may not be used at all.)
