But Milton may have wanted his readers, who are fallen themselves and thus prone to sin, to derive a secret thrill from the underdog Satan's rebellion and refusal to submit. In his book Surprised by Sin, Stanley Fish argues that the readers of PL are surprised by their own fall into sin as they move from the first half to the second half of Milton's epic.
