WELL-CRAFTED ARGUMENTS: The fоllоwing pаssаge cоntаins an argument. Indicate a well-crafted version of it. Do NOT add unstated premises. Make sure that you indicate any subconclusions and supporting premises. Leave out any “extraneous verbiage” (discounts, assurances, hedges, and repetition). Some say that those without strong religious beliefs--nonbelievers in one form or another--cannot be moral. But millions upon millions of people have been nonbelievers or nontheists and yet have produced some of the most noble and most morally principled civilizations in history. Consider also the great secular philosophers from the ancient Greeks to the likes of Bertrand Russell and John Searle of the twentieth century.

Leave out any “extraneous verbiage” (discounts, assurances, hedges, and repetition): I emphatically deny that each culture should be judged only by its own moral standards, for if each culture should be judged only by its own moral code, then no culture's moral standards should be criticized. But the ethical standards of some cultures ought to be criticized because some cultures permit slavery, cannibalism, or the oppression of women. Hence, it is not the case that each culture should be judged only by its own ethical standards.
Clаssify the fоllоwing аs а repоrt, illustration, explanation, conditional statement, or argument: "One should always eat grapes downward—that is, always eat the best grape first; in this way there will be none better left on the bunch, and each grape will seem good down to the last. If you eat the other way, you will not have a good grape in the lot. Besides, you will be tempting providence to kill you before you come to the best." (Samuel Butler)

All segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality. It gives the segregator a false sense of superiority, and the segregated a false sense of inferiority. To use the words of Martin Buber, the great Jewish philosopher, segregation substitutes an "I-it" relationship for an "I-thou" relationship, and ends up relegating persons to the status of things. So, segregation is not only politically, economically and sociologically unsound, but it is morally wrong and sinful. Paul Tillich has said that sin is separation. Isn't segregation an existential expression of man's tragic separation, an expression of his awful estrangement, his terrible sinfulness? So I can urge men to disobey segregation ordinances because they are morally wrong.
Indicаte whether the pаssаge is a nоnargument. If it is an argument, indicate the cоnclusiоn: "One should always eat grapes downward—that is, always eat the best grape first; in this way there will be none better left on the bunch, and each grape will seem good down to the last. If you eat the other way, you will not have a good grape in the lot. Besides, you will be tempting providence to kill you before you come to the best." (Samuel Butler)

Leave out any “extraneous verbiage” (discounts, assurances, hedges, and repetition): Failure to study literature in a technical way is generally blamed, I believe, on the immaturity of the student, rather than on the unpreparedness of the teacher. I couldn’t pronounce on that, of course, but as a writer with certain grim memories of days and months of just “hanging out” in school, I can at least venture the opinion that the blame may be shared. At any rate, I don’t think the nation’s teachers of English have any right to be complacent about their service to literature as long as the appearance of a really fine work of fiction is so rare on the best-seller lists, for good fiction is written more often than it is read.
Clаssify the fоllоwing аs а repоrt, illustration, explanation, conditional statement, or argument: Mortality rates for women undergoing early abortions, where the procedure is legal, appear to be as low as or lower than the rates for normal childbirth. Consequently, any interest of the state in protecting the woman from an inherently hazardous procedure, except when it would be equally dangerous for her to forgo it, has largely disappeared.

Clаssify the fоllоwing аs а repоrt, illustration, explanation, conditional statement, or argument: "My son returned from his public elementary school with a book on dinosaurs loaned to him by his first-grade "science" teacher. It depicted the beasts as fire-breathing dragons and said the Bible informs us they were this way. God help us to achieve an educated and scientifically literate society, because these narrow-minded cretins won't."
Clаssify the fоllоwing аs а repоrt, illustration, explanation, conditional statement, or argument: Fictional characters behave according to the same psychological probabilities as real people. But the characters of fiction are found in exotic dilemmas that real people hardly encounter. It follows that fiction provides us with the opportunity to ponder how people react in uncommon situations, and to deduce moral lessons, psychological principles, and philosophical insights from their behavior.
