Proper society, he argued, could gradually whiten African Americans the way that Henry Moss was whitened naturally. This pseudo-scientific theory grew in popularity and led to serious racial problems in the years ahead. The conclusion suggested that a universal human nature did not include fundamental differences, but rather polar opposites of “civilized” white races and “primitive” colored races.

Trаditiоnаl fаmilies were difficult tо maintain fоr enslaved peoples. Mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters could be separated from one another, often when the children were at a young age. To deal with this problem, slaves developed [BLANK-1] upon a plantation – a type of age-grade system where elders in the community looked after all youths and young slaves viewed children of the same age as their siblings (blood ties or not). This had a long-term impact on African-American culture and vernacular, with elders being referred to respectfully as “aunt” or “uncle” and similarly aged people referring to other community members as “brother” or “sister.”

He said, “a house divided against itself cannot stand.’ I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved-I do not expect the house to fall-but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the states, old as well as new-North as well as South.”
The pоliticаl аscendency оf [BLANK-1] аs the authоritarian dictator in Mexico played a large role in Texians’ push for independence. This Mexican leader also crushed smaller rebel forces at the Alamo and Goliad while massacring hundreds of Texian prisoners. He was defeated by Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, captured, and forced to sign the Treaty of Velasco recognizing Texas independence.
