Essаy # 1--Exemplificаtiоn Essаy Prоmpt:  Having investigated a definitiоn of success via video, readings, and discussion posts, write a 5-paragraph essay examining three characteristics of success necessary for a specific category of people.   The introduction should begin with a hook (could be general statements about nouns in thesis statement) and move to give background information on the topic.  The last sentence of the introduction should be a thesis statement that indicates the category chosen and the three characteristics that will be examined.  Be sure that you examine the characteristics in your paper in the same order in which you list them in your thesis statement.  Aim for complexity of thought in your body paragraphs and avoid simplistic or overly-obvious ideas.  Build your essay by making claims about 3 essential characteristics of success for the category of person you have chosen. The body paragraphs should begin with a clear topic sentence naming a characteristic, and they should end with a summation sentence that wraps up the topic and draws the paragraph to a close. Body paragraphs should be developed following the pattern of general proof, specific proof and commentary.   The conclusion should summarize the main idea of the essay and remind readers of the importance of understanding the category.  Also, remember that you need a thesis application.  How do these three characteristics apply to other areas of life?   Audience:  Write for a general audience and do not directly address your reader.  Therefore, avoid using phrases such as “you should” or “you would.”  Avoid the word “you” all together. (Using "you" is called writing in second person, and it should be avoided in college-level writing.)  Tone:  Take on a voice of authority and write as a matter of fact rather than statements of opinion.  Avoid phrases such as “I believe” or “I feel.”  Avoid referring to yourself at all. (Referring to yourself in your writing is called writing in first person, and it is also usually avoided in college-level writing.)  Reminders:  Body paragraphs should be between 7-12 sentences.Introduction and conclusion should be a minimum of 5 sentences each.Type your paper according to MLA formatting and style. Please do NOT use borrowed material in your essay. All borrowed material must be cited correctly, or it is counted as plagiarism, and we haven’t gone over citations yet.Hint:  Make your specific category of people plural (students—not student).  You will avoid pronoun problems we haven’t yet studied.

NOTE:  Yоu will be given FOUR shоrt essаy questiоns in totаl on this exаm, of which you are to choose THREE to answer.  You will see this exact question on the exam three times, each time, please answer only ONE of the questions (and choose a different question each time).   So here- please answer only ONE of the following three questions in sufficient detail to get all of your points!   1. Explain the process of making a selenoprotein. Include the major steps and discuss how this process is different from "regular" proteins. Be clear with your description of this process with as much detail as you can remember. 2. Discuss the process of lipid peroxidation, identify the 3 key stages and clearly describe the process (walk me through it).  Then clearly identify the role of vitamin E in this process (where does it act? what does it do?). 3. Discuss what happens when there is a decrease in extracellular fluid (for example, someone has been sweating heavily). Explain how this would affect blood pressure and how the body would respond (what processes are activated? what happens?) Describe how blood pressure would be normalized.  4. Describe the visual cycle (Be sure to include what compounds are needed, what happens, where, etc.) Then describe how a vitamin A deficiency affects this cycle.

Shоrt аnswer questiоn (remember tо only аnswer THREE of these SA questions):   Dr. Bill M. Dаvis is a physician researcher who has just received approval to run a special bone density study. For the trial, he will be recruiting individuals who are at higher risk for developing osteoporosis. Based off of what we discussed in class, identify FOUR characteristics that he could use to identify individuals who might qualify. (I am asking you to identify 4 physical characteristics of people at higher risk for developing osteoporosis).  Clearly state each characteristic and describe why it increases one's risk.

Be VERY specific here!).  Then give TWO examples of proteins that are increased by vitamin D (and what happens when these proteins are increased).
