Family reports history of heavy drinking habits and 15 lb weight loss. He was previously diagnosed with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Paracentesis and TIPS procedures were performed two years ago. Joe’s condition seems to have worsened as he has developed ascites and edema; his urinary output has decreased and he continues to lose weight. Joe also complains of nausea, vomiting, and pain when swallowing food. Because of Joe’s persistent symptoms, he’s been admitted to the hospital.
