Hоw might the use оf cоrticosteroids impаct Alаn's nutritionаl status?Patient Scenario: Alan is a 54-year old business man who has smoked for 39 years.  A few months ago, he noticed white sores that were getting bigger in his mouth near the tongue.  He started feeling bad and was unable to eat due to severe pain and lost 20 lbs in one month.  Alan went to a clinic where a biopsy that revealed squamous cell cancer of the tongue.  Alan has undergone radiation therapy (RT) and surgery to remove the cancer and a restorative surgery is scheduled.  Due to RT, Alan has developed mucositis and xerostomia in his mouth.  No metastasis was found and the surgeon was confident all cancer had been removed.   Ht: 5’11”             UBW: 180 lbs        ABW: 160 lbs  Labs:      Alb: 3.1        BUN: 25        creatinine: 1.4      Ferritin: 28         HDL: 38 Meds: corticosteroids and dexamethasone (to reduce inflammation)
