During the procedure, Lily develops respiratory apnea. Bernard does not notice immediately, because he is texting other staff members to find coverage for another employee who has called in sick. Bernard checks on Lily after 15 minutes of anesthesia and discovers her heart has stopped. Despite CPR efforts, Lily cannot be revived.   Later that day, Dr. Jimenez tells the client that nothing could have been done to prevent the tragedy; Lily is simply one of those unlucky patients who had an unforeseen complication with anesthesia.
