Of Aristоtle, Hоbbes, аnd Lоcke, who hаs the most persuаsive perspective on human nature regarding the relationship between human nature and the best political regime? What makes it the most persuasive? With what consequences for criticizing or defending liberal democracy? With respect to the tension between individual liberty and political authority, what insights do the respective arguments of Aristotle, Hobbes, and Locke offer in understanding the current challenges faced by liberal democracies today? Discuss “the classical “polis” as a theme and matter of dispute in the history of political philosophy. Why does Aristotle seem by all indications to think that the polis is the political structure most in accord with human nature? And why do later thinkers disagree with him? It is up to you to choose which later thinkers you would like to discuss, but you should include at least two and preferably three. In discussing each thinker, you should address both what he has to say directly about the classical polis, but also how his view is tied to his broader vision of the best political structure.
