How can we track our 4,000 totes of parts as they are shipped to our customers and returned? Our current tote management using tags with barcode data entry seems too labor intensive and too slow. How can we support better tote availability for our logistics operations? Sincerely, Maria   Email #2    Components Plus TO:         (M2a)_______________________________ FROM:   Leornard.Taylor@ComponentsPlus.com (operations manager) CC:         Maria.Crespo@ComponentsPlus.com (supply chain manager)  DATE:    Wednesday, November 4 RE:        Counting returnable transport items with a focus on totes  (M2a) ____________________, As we read in Maria’s (supply chain manager's) recent email, returnable transport item (RTI) shortages are incurring high tote replacement costs and increasing lead-times. Attached is a graph of the materials, methods, personnel, and equipment involved in our current RTI system for our totes. I recommend that we update our tracking technology from barcodes to RFID technology to help us improve our product tracking and tote inventory management. I propose that we invest in an RFID system that in seconds can record tote location and support tote inventory management. The RFID system requires both a handheld reader and RFID tags for each item counted. Table 1 shows the costs for six low-cost RFID options. I recommend RFID model (M2b)________________ based on (M2c)___________________________________.   Table 1. Equipment for Counting Tagged Tote Inventory Equipment Handheld reader purchase cost Tag purchase cost RFID #R38 $1,810 $0.32/tag RFID #R39 $1,740 $0.30/tag RFID #R40 $1,790 $0.31/tag RFID #R41 $2,030 $0.22/tag RFID #R42 $2,103 $0.24/tag RFID #R43 $2,110 $0.23/tag I can test this plan for a sample of totes. If it works as expected, we can expand this plan to track all our totes and other RTIs in our logistics system with RFID technology. Sincerely, Leonard Attachment: Current RTI System for Totes
