Sоurce: Fаrewell Address given by the Prоphet Muhаmmаd during his last pilgrimage tо Mecca. “O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I don’t know whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore, listen to what I am saying to you carefully. O People, just as you regard this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. "O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have right over you. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers… O People, listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in zakah (charity). Perform Hajj if you can afford to. You know that every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. You are all equal. Nobody has superiority over other except by piety and good action. Remember, one day you will appear before Allah and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone." QUESTIONS: 1. Sоurce: Prоcоpius, Byzаntine historiаn - Description of Hаgia Sophia from AD 537. The emperor...collected together workmen from every land. It is indeed a proof of the esteem with which God regarded the emperor, that he furnished him with men who would be so useful in effecting his designs, and we are compelled to admire the wisdom of the emperor, in being able to choose the most suitable of mankind to execute the noblest of his works.... A spherical-shaped dome standing upon this circle makes it exceedingly beautiful; from the lightness of the building, it does not appear to rest upon a solid foundation, but to cover the place beneath as though it were suspended from heaven by the fabled golden chain. No one ever became weary of this spectacle, but those who are in the church delight in what they see... Moreover it is impossible accurately to describe the gold, and silver, and gems, presented by the Emperor Justinian. That part of the church which is especially sacred, and where the priests alone are allowed to enter, which is called the Sanctuary, contains forty thousand pounds' weight of silver. QUESTIONS: 1. How does Procopius describe the church of Hagia Sophia? 2. What information does he provide about Byzantine culture and religion? Your answer must be in your own words- do not use direct quotes. Your answer must be a minimum of 75 words.
Sоurce: The Cоde оf Justiniаn, а collection of Romаn laws and legal principles enacted by the Roman Emperor Justinian, 524. Justinian issued the code in order to update the Roman legal system. THE LAW OF PERSONS: The chief division in the rights of persons is this: men are all either free or slaves. Freedom, from which men are said to be free, is the natural power of doing what we each please, unless prevented by force or by law. Slaves either are born or become so. They are born so when their mother is a slave; they become so either by captivity, or by the civil law, as when a free person, above the age of twenty, suffers himself to be sold, that he may share the price given for him. (debt slavery) MARRIAGE: Roman citizens are bound together in lawful matrimony when they are united according to law, the males having attained the age of puberty, and the females a marriageable age; but they must first obtain the consent of their parents, in whose power they are. There are also restrictions on marriage between collateral relations. A brother and sister are forbidden to marry, whether they are the children of the same father and mother, or of one of the two only. A man may not marry the daughter of a brother, or a sister, nor the granddaughter. THE LAW OF THINGS: The following things are by natural law common to all—the air, running water, the sea, and consequently the sea-shore. 1. No one is forbidden access to the seashore, monuments, and buildings generally. 2. All rivers and harbors are public, so that all persons have a right to fish therein. 3. Again, the public use of the banks of a river, as of the river itself, is part of the law of nations; consequently every one is entitled to bring his vessel to the bank, as freely as he may navigate the river itself. QUESTIONS: 1. What do these laws tell us about gender roles during the reign of Justinian? 2. How did these laws regulate life in the Byzantine Empire? 3. How do these laws relate to other law codes we have read about this semester? Your answer must be in your own words- do not use direct quotes. Your answer must be a minimum of 75 words.
Sitting аtоp the highest pоint in оld Jerusаlem, the Dome of the Rock’s golden-color Dome аnd Turkish ceramic tiles dominates the cityscape of Old Jerusalem and served as a testament to the power of the new faith of Islam. The Dome of the Rock is one of the earliest surviving buildings from the Islamic world. At the center of the Dome of the Rock sits a large rock, which is believed to be the location where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac. Today, Muslims believe that the Rock commemorates the night journey of Muhammad. One night the Angel Gabriel came to Muhammad while he slept near the Kaaba in Mecca and took him to the farthest mosque in Jerusalem. From the Rock, Muhammad journeyed to heaven, where he met other prophets, such as Moses and Christ, witnessed paradise and hell, and finally saw God enthroned and surrounded by angels. The colonnades are adorned with exceptional mosaics. Golden mosaics depicting jewels shimmer in this glittering light. The mosaics in the Dome of the Rock contain no human figures or animals. Instead, we see vegetative scrolls and motifs. Byzantine and Sasanian crowns in the midst of vegetal motifs are also visible. Thus, the iconography of the Dome of the Rock also includes the other major civilizations of the region, which the Arab armies had defeated. QUESTIONS: 1. How does the author describe the Dome of the Rock? 2. What information does he provide about Islamic culture and religion? Your answer must be in your own words- do not use direct quotes. Your answer must be a minimum of 75 words.
