Dreams Really Do Come True Considering the fact that the average human sleeps for one-third of his or her lifetime, having a vivid, memorable dream is a relatively rare experience for most people. In fact, there are some people who claim to never have any dreams at all. Going to the other extreme, there are people who not only have incredibly vivid dreams on a regular basis, but they are also able to guide their dreams and decide what happens in them. The technique is called lucid dreaming. While it may be hard to believe, sleep experts and psychologists agree that by following a few routines, it is possible for anyone to induce a lucid dreaming state and control their dreams for extended periods of time (LaBerge, 1990). Lucid dreaming is actually a very common phenomenon that most people have experienced (although usually only for very brief moments). When a sleeping person becomes aware of the fact that he or she is dreaming, it usually results in the person waking up and the dream ending. This is why people typically remember only the very last parts of their dreams. It is possible, however, to become aware of a dream and remain sleeping. Within that narrow window between being fully asleep and being fully awake is where lucid dreaming occurs. The first and simplest step toward developing the ability to control dreams is to make a habit of asking oneself throughout the day, “Am I dreaming?” While it is certainly uncommon for a person to actually believe that they are dreaming when they are awake and going about their day, the purpose of asking this question is to train the mind to habitually take notice of the current state it is in. If done repeatedly over an extended period of time, the habit will continue while the person is asleep (Schroeder, 2018). The next practice is to keep a dream journal and record dreams immediately after waking up. Remembering the specific details of a dream can be challenging, but most people find that their entries get more and more detailed the longer they keep a dream journal. Even if the ultimate goal of lucid dreaming is never achieved, the practice of keeping the dream journal can be incredibly rewarding because it can increase the vividness of one’s dreams as well as provide insight into a person’s mental well-being (LaBerge, 1990). A third method for inducing the lucid dream state is perhaps the most challenging as it involves waking up while in the deepest stage of sleep (known as REM), staying awake for approximately twenty minutes, and then going right back to sleep. Experts say that you should get out of bed during the twenty minutes but try not to engage in any activity that will cause you to have difficulty falling back to sleep. They suggest meditation, focusing your thoughts on what you want to dream about, or reading about lucid dreaming in order to stay focused on the goal. If done successfully, the person will slip right back into REM and begin lucid dreaming immediately (Voss, 2009). Each of these techniques is based on the principle that increasing awareness of dreams while awake will increase a person’s awareness of dreams while asleep. Indeed, it has been found that just thinking about dreaming helps close the gap between the dreaming and waking states. Although the practice of lucid dreaming has been around for centuries, scientists still do not know much about the impacts, either positive or negative, that the practice may have on a person’s mental or physical health. It is well understood that the human body needs sleep in order to function properly, and that the quality of one’s sleep is often directly related to one’s overall mental and physical health (MediResource, 2019). It makes sense, then, to question whether or not people who spend years practicing lucid dreaming are compromising certain health benefits of uninterrupted sleep. Practiced in moderation, however, lucid dreaming can bring about greater self-confidence, lower anxiety, and sharper mental focus (LaBerge, 1990).
