SECTION B: CONTEXTUAL QUESTIONS   QUESTION 3   “Cоupling аntibiоtics with stem cells tо fight off bone infections.”     Kаnаzawa University (Japan) is developing new research into adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) treating bacterial bone infections as a result of bone implants.   Bone fractures (a break in a bone) require bone implants for effective healing. However, such implants may cause bacterial infections such as septic arthritis and osteomyelitis. The main genus that causes bone infections is Staphylococcus bacteria.   To treat these infections antibiotics are prescribed to patients over long periods of time. However, the prolonged use of these antibiotics leads to the bacteria developing resistance to the antibiotics.   Researchers from Kanazawa University are developing new antibiotics that will defeat the antibacterial resistant bacteria using stem cells, specifically stem cells found in the bone marrow and adipose tissue. These adipose-derived stem cells possess antimicrobial properties and can be easily harvested.   (extract adapted from: Kanazawa University.
