Science Shepherd Biology Chapter 4

transmembrane proteins – Integral proteins that span the membrane.
ATP – Produced as a result of the high concentrations of the protons
protein – A biologically functional molecule consisting of one or more polypeptides folded and coiled into a specific three-dimensional structure.
ion – an atom or group of atoms that has gained or lost one or more electrons, thus acquiring a charge
Proteins – Biomolecules (polymers) made up of amino acids which serve several functions, including enzymes, some hormones, structural molecules, and cell transport (embedded in the cell membrane)
oval – leaf that is egg shaped
interstitial fluid – Watery, internal environment of vertebrates.
nonnative species – A species normally living outside a distribution range that has been introduced through either deliberate or accidental human activity; also can be known as introduced, invasive, alien, nonindigenous, or exotic.
What is a stimulus? – a physical or chemical change in the environment
The patient’s UA showed a presence of pus, which is called
How are water levels balanced? – The brain and the kidneys are vital at balancing water. Receptor cells in the brain check the level of water, and the brain processes the information. It then sends the response to the pituitary gland, which is an effector, to produce the response. A hormone is released, which affects the kidneys and controls the water being released and retained in the blood.
archaebacteria – kingdom of bacteria which live in extreme/harsh environments (ex: methanogens)
The pаtient’s UA shоwed а presence оf pus, which is cаlled
NADP+ – NADP+ temporarily stores the energized electrons.
What does 1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids together make – Lipid
metabolism – the sum of all chemical reactions within the organism
Equation to determine ratio of volume in cells 10.1 – length x width x height
1cm cubed = 1cm x 1cm x 1cm = 1cm3 (1cm cubed)
