Ch 4 Biology Vocabulary

nondisjunction – process in which sister chromatids fail to separate during and after mitosis or meiosis
natural selection – process by which organisms with variation most suited to their environment survive and leave more offspring
Organic Molecule – A molecule that contains only carbon and any of the following: hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and/or phosphorous.
cerebellum – Part of the vertebrate hindbrain; mainly a planning center that interacts closely with the cerebrum in coordinating body movement.
Endoplasmic Reticulum – Rather grand network of tubes that winds all around the cell (from the nucleus to the plasma membrane).
Two Types
Smooth: w/o ribosomes on the surface
Rough: Has ribosomes on its surface
Hypertonic – Describes a solution that has more things dissolved in it (high concentration of solute) than another solution
food web – A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains
Visual examination within (a hollow organ)
Abiotic factor – Describes the nonliving part of the environment, including water, rocks, lights, and temperature.
Which of the following statements describes the results of this reaction?
C6H12O6 + 6 O2 → 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy – C6H12O6 is oxidized and O2 is reduced.
Pyruvic acid
lactic acid
2 ATP – lactic acid fermentation
bud scale – The protective outer layer of a bud that covers its embryonic leaves and any flowering parts.
Visuаl exаminаtiоn within (a hоllоw organ)
7.6.1 State that metabolic pathways consist of chains and cycles of enzyme-catalysed reactions. – Enzymes catalyse chains or cyclic rings of reactions where one substrate forms a new product to be used in the next step of the reaction. Each step is catalysed by a specific enzyme until end product formation.
sepal – A modified leaf of a flowering plant. A whorl of sepals encloses and protects the flower bud before it opens.
T/F ATP is good at storing a lot of energy. – False.
