Deer Lоdge Regiоnаl Hоspitаl plаns to use activity-based costing to assign hospital indirect costs to the care of patients. The hospital has identified the following activities and activity rates for the hospital indirect costs: Activity Activity Rate Room and Meals $225 per day Radiology $300 per image Pharmacy $50 per physician order Chemistry Lab $125 per test Operating Room $3,000 per operating room hour The records of two representative patients were analyzed, using the activity rates. The activity information associated with the two patients is as follows: Patient Franklin Patient Kramer Number of days 1 day 4 days Number of images 2 images 5 images Number of orders 1 order 8 orders Number of tests 2 tests 5 tests Number of operating room hours 0.6 hour 2.8 hours Determine the activity cost associated with patient Franklin.

Cаse study #6 Clоstridium bоtulinum is the cаusаtive agent оf botulism. This Gram-positive, anaerobic bacillus is commonly found on plants, in soil and water, and in the intestinal tract of some animals. The main virulence factor of C. botulinum is botulism toxin, which is a protein neurotoxin that causes muscle paralysis. Death results from paralysis of respiratory muscles. Genetic analysis has led to the understanding that C. botulinum has acquired its toxin genes from lysogenic bacteriophages. Adults who ingest C. botulinum spores alone generally do not become ill. However, adult botulism will result after ingestion of food containing botulinum toxin. Boiling and common chemical treatments used for water denatures botulism toxin. Infantile botulism, rather, results after children under the age of one ingest foods, such as honey, which contains C. botulinum spores but no botulinum toxin. Once inside the infant gut, these spores germinate and botulism toxin is produced after colonization. Treatment for botulism requires injections of botulinum antitoxin, pre-made antibodies that are administered to the patient as quickly as possible.
