Biology Chapter 20: Unifying Concepts Of Animal Structure And Function

ribonucleic acid – A type of nucleic acid consisting of a polynucleotide made up of nucleotide monomers with a ribose sugar and the nitrogenous bases adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and uracil (U); usually single-stranded; functions in protein synthesis, gene regulation, and as the genome of some viruses.
Ecosystem – Community of living species and their physical environments.
controlled experiment – A test of the effect of a single variable by changing it while keeping all other variables the same.
Angiosperm – A flowering plant which forms seeds inside a protective chamber called an ovary.
phospholipid – has a head and two tails and makes the membrane bilayer
Macroevolution – an evolution at or above the species level
club fungus – Member of a group of fungi characterized by club-shaped, spore-producing structures called basidia.
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) – A signal receptor protein in the plasma membrane that responds to the binding of a signaling molecule by activating a G protein. Also called a G protein-linked receptor.
What is a hypotonic solution? – When there is a solute concentration that is higher inside the cell, and water diffuses into the cell.
abiotic factor – nonliving physical or chemical condition in an environment
The term spondylarthritis is defined as inflammation of the
mitochondrion – …bean-shaped organelle that supplies energy to the cell and has its own ribosomes and DNA
nymph – The intermediate stage of an insect going through incomplete metamorphosis. It looks similar to the adult form when it initially hatches from the egg, but lacks wings and reproductive organs.
translocation – Change to a chromosome in which a fragment of one chromosome attaches to a nonhomologous chromosome.
Polar covalent bond – A covalent bond where the sharing of electrons is uneven resulting in partial positive and partial negative charges
homeotic gene – a section of the DNA molecule that regulates morphogenesis by controlling gene expression
Golgi apparatus – a system of membranes that modifies and packages proteins for export by the cell
stimulus – an aspect or change in an individuals external or internal environment that causes some sort of response, something in the environment detected by a receptor or sensor
The term spоndylаrthritis is defined аs inflаmmatiоn оf the
glial cells – Cells in the nervous system that support, nourish, and protect neurons.
