Requirements: In this essаy, yоu will demоnstrаte yоur understаnding of literary research by supporting a thesis and integrating and documenting sources/quotes from your textbook in a 600-800 word research paper. You have 75 minutes to write the essay, and you must write the essay in one sitting.  Remember, a thesis statement is an arguable point, not a fact, placed as the last sentence in your introductory (first) paragraph. You must submit a Works Cited page along with your essay. A cover page and outline are not necessary.  You may use your Norton Anthology textbook. No notes, papers, or additional materials are allowed. No outside sources may be used for this essay; use only the authors and texts on our reading list and the editors in the textbook.  You may only write about the texts on our reading list. Make sure you cite the authors and editors that you use on your Works Cited page. You are required to use at least four quotes throughout the essay. Do not use blocks of quotes!! Remember, quotes should help strengthen your argument.   Respond to one (1) of the following:  1.) Compare Jewett’s Sylvy in “A White Heron” with any other female character you have encountered in American realist fiction—for example, Mrs. Merrick in Willa Cather’s “The Sculptor's Funeral.” 2.) How do the works by Washington and DuBois reflect or conflict with the narrative of the American civil rights struggle or with the establishment of an African American voice in our literary history?  3.) Compare the poetics of Frost and Dickinson. 4.) Compare two of the male characters you have read so far. What might these characters suggest about manhood as an American experience?  (Texts that might work especially well for this prompt include Crane's "The Open Boat," London's "To Build a Fire," and Cather's "The Sculptor's Funeral."). 5.) Discuss how two of the works you have read so far are naturalistic. (Texts that might work especially well for this prompt include Jewett's "A White Heron," Crane's "The Open Boat," and London's "To Build a Fire.").   You must cite two specific examples from each text. Make sure to use quotes!    Once your essay has been submitted, I will grade it as your final copy. I will not review rough drafts. Please make sure to attach your essay and Works Cited page as one document and submit it as an ATTACHMENT. Any plagiarism or generative AI content found will be awarded the grade of zero. The deadline to submit your essay is 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, July 1. See the calendar for the deadline. Failure to meet the deadline will result in an automatic zero. The instructor will not accept any work submitted after the deadline, regardless of the excuse.
