Whаt аre the "Fоrmed Elements"? Mixed in with the blооd plаsma (the watery part of the blood, made of water, sugars, electrolytes, ions, gases, proteins, and other solutes) are a special group of structures called formed elements.  Formed elements are the cells (red blood cells, white blood cells) and cell-fragments (platelets) found within the blood. The erythrocyte, commonly known as a red blood cell or RBC, is by far the most common formed element: a single drop of blood contains millions of erythrocytes and just thousands of leukocytes. In fact, erythrocytes are estimated to make up about 25 percent of the total cells in the body! The leukocyte, commonly known as a white blood cell or WBC, is another of the formed elements found in blood. There are five kinds of leukocytes, which can be differentiated based on morphological characteristics, such as their size, color, shape of their nucleus, and whether they are granulocytes (their cytoplasm contains colored granules which are the machinery that help with immunity) or agranulocytes (lack granules in the cytoplasm). Each leukocyte helps defend the body against disease in a different way. Platelets, the final formed element, are actually tiny cell fragments, and are needed to clot the blood after a blood vessel is ruptured. Figure: Blood cells include erythrocytes (red blood cells), five kinds of leukocytes (white blood cells) with a noticeable difference between the granulocytes and agranulocytes, and platelets (cell fragments involved in clotting).
