SARS-CоV-2, the cоrоnаvirus responsible for the diseаse COVID-19, contаins an RNA genome surrounded by a protein capsid (coat) and a lipid envelope (membrane). Its spike proteins enable it to bind to ACE2 receptors of epithelial cells, allowing it to gain entry. Once inside, the virus hijacks the cellular functions and effectively turns the cell into a virus producing factory, with the synthesis of viral genome and proteins allowing virus particles to assemble and exit the cell. This overall process is representative of what viruses in general accomplish when infecting cells. Based on this information and your understanding of the definition of life, are viruses alive? Please explain, including in your answer specific definitions of what it means to be alive, and addressing whether or not these apply to viruses. Select your answer. TCR+ CD4+ CD8+ TCR+ CD4+ CD8- TCR- CD4+ CD8- TCR+ CD4- CD8+ (ii) 3 pts: When antigen binds to the T cell receptor, which of the following is involved in signal transduction?  a) CD3 b) CD21 c) LFA-1 d) Iga/Igb (iii) 9 pts: Describe briefly in biochemical terms how the coreceptor (CD4/CD8) cooperates with the TCR to initiate signaling.    -------------------------------------- 7. (i) 2 pts: Which of the following statements about interleukin 2 (IL-2) is incorrect? a) It can activate CD8+ T cells in the presence of antigen b) It is produced by CD4+ T cells c) It can induce the proliferation of CD4+ T cells d) It binds to a specific receptor on CD4+ T cells e) It is produced primarily by activated macrophages   (ii) 3 pts: Define what is costimulation?   (iii) 9 pts: Briefly explain with examples why CD28 family members include both positive and negative regulators of T cell activation.    --------------------------------------    8. 14 pts: Which of these statements are false? Justify your answer with a brief explanation. (a) Positive selection is generally induced when the antigen receptor of a T cell reacts strongly to a self-peptide. (b) Memory T cells express CD45RA. (c) During development in the thymus, those cells that become CD4 T cells also acquire the ability to be cytotoxic T cells. (d) TCR reactivity with self-peptide + class I MHC leads to the development of a CD8 T cell. (e) CD40 ligand is expressed by resting T cells.
