The term "American Dream" was first coined in 1931 by James Adams in his work The Epic of America. Select one author of your choice and explain how that author presents the American Dream as an inspiring reality or a hopeless fantasy – or maybe a little bit of both.     2. During the early 20th century, American society witnessed many major ideological shifts as the nation tried to come to terms with the many meanings of modernity. World War I ushered in more progressive forms of political and social life. Women and racial minorities gained some civil liberties and some new social freedoms during this period, though they still faced discrimination. Carefully analyzing one of the novels from the first half of the century, explain how the author represented this discrimination in his or her work.     5. Narratology is a branch of literary criticism, specifically formalism, that looks at the structure and function of narration and how it affects a reader's perception.
