What Lanchester Law would apply if the armies closed on each other and fought? Why? b. Applying the law from (a), assume that: If the square law applies, each soldier kills .1 enemy every minute. If the linear law applies, every soldier kills .04% of the enemy every minute. (Note: Only the front ranks can actually engage.  When a soldier in the front rank falls, another from behind replaces him so the front remains continuous.) If the armies had equal effectiveness and fought to the end, what would be the result (in numbers of troops remaining)?  c. However, you know that soldier-for-soldier the professional Spartans are reputed to be 10 times as effective (per soldier) as your militia. If this were true, what would be the likely outcome?  Do some calculations and make a prediction about the course of the battle.  [You need not calculate the exact outcome, though you can.  You do need to do enough analysis to predict the outcome.] d. If the Antirhions decide not to meet the Spartans head on across open terrain, what would be two alternative strategies for the Antirhions?
