Generаl Instructiоns: This essаy аssignment requires yоu tо use the close reading/literary analysis skills we have discussed and practiced in class so far this semester. You will choose one of the short fiction readings from the assigned reading list and answer the associated question about the reading listed below. You will not be retelling or summarizing the plot of the story; rather, you will interact with the text and make connections between the themes/meaning of the story and broader elements of human life and existence. The overall goal is to make an argument about the meaning of the story and the literary techniques the author uses to express this meaning. You will use textual evidence (i.e. quotes from the story) to back up your argument. First, choose one of the following stories to write about: Tim O’Brien’s “The Lives of the Dead” Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birth-Mark” William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” Flannery O’Connor’s “Everything that Rises Must Converge” Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”   If you choose to write about one of the stories by O’Brien, Marquez, or Hawthorne, your essay should answer the following question:   What do you think is the deeper hidden meaning of the text, and how does the author use the text to express this meaning? In answering this question, consider the themes and literary devices we have discussed in class about each of these readings.   If you choose to write about one of the stories by Faulkner or O’Connor, your essay should answer the following question:   What point do you think the author is trying to make about life in the American South, and how does the author use the text to express this point?  In answering this question, consider the themes and literary devices we have discussed in class about each of these readings.   Specific Instructions: 600-900 words Third person (do not use “I,” “you,” “we,” “us,” etc.) Your essay must contain an introduction paragraph with thesis statement, body paragraphs that support your thesis statement, and a conclusion paragraph that recaps your main points and answers the “so what?” question. You must use 3 outside sources. These sources should be scholarly sources that were written about the story you are analyzing or that deal with the same themes, topics, or literary devices you are analyzing (you will have 4 total sources in your works cited page: 3 outside sources and the story itself). Your 3 outside sources MUST come from a scholarly source. The databases of the Alabama Virtual Library and Google Scholar are the best places to find good, credible, scholarly sources for research essays. Generally, websites that end in “.org” or “.edu” are also considered credible sources. Do not use any sources that come from a website that ends with “.com.” This includes websites like LitCharts, SparkNotes, Cliffs Notes, com, School Work Helper, Course Hero, Bartleby.com, Internet Public Library (IPL.org is not credible because it is an essay repository), and others. If you use any of these websites as a source, you will receive a significant grading penalty. If you have a question about whether your source is considered “scholarly,” please reach out to me as soon as possible. Failure to use scholarly sources will result in a significant grading penalty. Proper MLA formatting Proper MLA in-text citations every time you use information from an outside source including direct quotes, summaries, and paraphrases Proper MLA works cited entries for each source you cite in the text of your essay See the essay grading rubric for a breakdown of how the points will be determined.     Sample literary analysis thesis statements:   In Anton Chekhov’s “Gooseberries,” the author uses imagery and irony to illustrate the fleeting and deceptive nature of human happiness.   Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the symbol of a birthmark to show the tragic consequences of pursuing perfection at all costs.   In the short story “Everything that Rises Must Converge,” Flannery O’Connor explores the conflicts and complexities of Southern life during desegregation through the use of characterization and the theme of generational conflict.
