“Lu Hui’s pаrents died when he wаs yоung аnd he was brоught up in his mоther’s family. His uncle often encouraged him to take the imperial examination. Uprisings, however, prevented Lu from being able to take the examinations. Unable to make a living, Lu became a poor wandering student. One day, Zheng Xu, who was a high-ranking government official, offered to make arrangements that would allow Lu to bypass the exams and advance himself with Zheng’s support. Zheng tried to tempt Lu to skirt the rules, saying ‘How long can a man live? If there is a shortcut to riches and fame, why insist on going through examinations?’ But Lu firmly refused the offer, saying, ‘Our great nation has established the examination system for the outstanding and the talented. My uncle always encouraged me to take the examinations and I cannot bring myself to break our agreement. If I have to die as a mere student, it is my fate. But I will not change my mind for the sake of wealth.’ When Zheng saw Lu’s determination, he respected him even more than before. Another ten years passed before Lu finally passed the examination. He died as one of the highest officials in the whole empire.” Source:  Wang Dingbao, government official in a regional state established after the collapse of the Tang Dynasty, Selected Stories From the Time of The Tang, a collection of biographies, written circa 940 C.E   The passage most strongly reflects the continuing influence of which of the following belief systems in Chinese society?

Pаssаge 3 Types оf Pоwer [A] Why dоes one person in а relationship have power over the other? There are many explanations; one that works well identifies five sources of power: legitimate power, referent power, expert power, reward power, and coercive power. [B] Legitimate power is a power that comes because of respect for a position that another person holds.  Teachers, parents, law officers, store managers, and company presidents all have power because of the position they hold relative to other people. When a police officer tells you to pull off to the side of the road, you respond to this enactment of power by obeying the officer’s command. [C] Referent power is a power that comes from our attraction to another person or the charisma a person possesses. We let people we like influence us. We change our behavior to meet their demands or desires because we are attracted to them. [D] Expert power is based on the influence derived from a person’s knowledge and experience. We convey power on those who know more than we do or have some expertise we do not possess. This knowledge can even include knowledge about how to manage a relationship. We might defer to the expertise of friends, for example, when trying to handle a relational crisis. [E] Reward power is based on another person’s ability to satisfy your needs. There are obvious rewards, such as money and gifts, but most rewards are more interpersonal in nature. The degree to which another person is able to satisfy those needs of control, affection, and inclusion gives them a certain power. For example, those people who are able to help you meet your need to be included in social activities have power over you. You will do what they ask if you see that your need will continue to be met. Reward power is probably the most common form of power in interpersonal relationships. Withholding rewards is actually a form of punishment, also known as coercive power. [F] Coercive power involves the use of sanctions or punishment to influence others. Sanctions include holding back or removing rewards. If you have a high need for physical affection, your partner might threaten to hold back affection if you do not comply with a request. You might threaten to end the relationship as a sanctioned form of power in order to accomplish a goal. Punishment involves imposing something on another person that he or she does not want. Coercive power exists in relationships when one partner has the ability to impose the sanction or punishment on another. Your parents had the power to take away your allowance when you were younger; therefore, you did the chores they requested. However, once you have your own source of income, your parents no longer have this source of power over you. (Beebe, Beebe, and Redmond, Interpersonal Communication, p. 299)
